Description
The Whitgift School War Memorial consists of two main components commemorating the school's fallen in both World Wars.
The First World War memorial features a cross fleury on top of a pillar that flares out at the base, resting on an octagonal plinth made of Hopton Wood stone. The front face of the plinth is inscribed with the words: IN / REMEMBRANCE / OF OUR DEAD / 1914 - 1919 / VINCIT QVI PATITVR. Four other faces of the plinth display carvings of the shields of Whitgift School, Croydon, Surrey, and the Canterbury diocese. This plinth is supported by an octagonal stone base.
The Second World War memorial is a large rectangular mural that depicts two globes, representing each hemisphere, with a cross fleury positioned between them. Above the globes, an inscription reads: TO OUR GLORIOUS DEAD, with the years '1939' and '1945' flanking the globes. At the bottom, the mural includes the words: BY / SEA / LAND / AIR / VINCIT QVI PATITVR.
The motto "Vincit qui patitur," meaning "Who perseveres, conquers," is associated with the school.
