Description

The Church of St George is a church and community centre built in 1932, designed by architect W Curtis Green. It is constructed from multicoloured brick in Flemish bond, featuring Portland stone dressings and renewed tiled roofs. The building has wooden surrounds to the windows and is designed in the shape of a Greek Cross, with extensions to the east and west arms. A bellcote is located at the west end.

The west end of the nave is highlighted by a tall lancet window, flanked by triangular capped pilasters. There are projecting porticos with boarded doors and intricate ironmongery. The side elevations include transepts with tall lancet windows and two mullioned windows with iron casements. The vestry has an additional two windows and three plank doors.

Inside, the structure is supported by arches that reflect 'crucks'. The boarded roof features three tiers of purlins. The nave includes a gallery at the back, and part of it has been partitioned off in the late 20th century to create a community centre. Notable interior fittings consist of an oak organ case, an octagonal oak pulpit, and an unusual circular oak font supported by three columns of Clipsham stone with a steel bowl. There are also double doors adorned with star decoration. The Lady Chapel features a seven-traceried window and a painting by Cicely Mary Barker, known for illustrating the Flower Fairy books, who also taught at the Sunday School.
