Description
The Old Tithe Barn in Waddon is a former barn that has been converted into offices. It dates from the 18th century and is depicted on the 1799 map of Waddon Court. This unusual structure consists of two parallel ranges with an M-shaped roof. It is timber-framed and clad in light brickwork, featuring a very steeply pitched tiled roof with wooden louvres at the ends of each range.
On the west side, there is a hipped midstray with double doors, three 20th-century windows, and some 18th-century brickwork arranged in English bond. The north side has 19th and 20th-century brickwork in Flemish bond, while the east side also features 20th-century brickwork in Flemish bond. The south side includes two diagonal brick buttresses and mainly 19th and 20th-century brickwork.
The barn has seven bays and is aisled, but there are no aisle posts in the center. The upright posts are unjowled and supported by diagonal braces, with the aisle parts resting on brick padstones. The roof is a butt purlin type, with two tiers of tiles and struts connecting the posts to the lower purlin. This barn may have been built to replace the old Orrydan tithe barn, which was converted into 24 cottages. In the late 18th century, it was part of Waddon Court and later became part of Coldharbour Farm.
