Description
61 and 61A Plough Lane is a Grade II listed building originally built as four cottages, known as Nos 1, 2, 3, and 4 The Model Cottages, around the mid-19th century. This two-storey range features eight window bays, with each first-floor window topped by a gable. The end and center bays project forward and are surmounted by wider gables with bargeboards, and there are porches in the returns of these projections. The building has a plain tile roof and a yellow stock brick front with red brick dressings. The windows are two-light casements with small panes, while the lower windows are leaded and set in pointed arches, featuring red brick herringbone work in the tympana. The porches have hipped tile roofs and ledged doors. Originally constructed to provide accommodation for workers of the Carew Estate, the cottages later served as almshouses for the Church in Beddington. Each end return has an external chimney, one of which bears a coat of arms, while the other has a plaque with the initials HJ or JH and the date 1859, likely referring to Rev James Hamilton, rector of Beddington from 1841 to 1860. The building is shown on the Ordnance Survey map of 1868.
