Description
Camden House, formerly known as Brandries Hill House, is a late 18th-century house located in The Brandries, Beddington. It retains a similar appearance to its mid-19th century appearance, although there have been alterations to the south front, and it currently appears neglected. The house is three stories high with a basement. It is constructed of brick, rendered with cement, and has a slate roof.
The west return features a balustraded panel set between two tall stacks. The north-east front has five window bays, with Ionic pilasters featuring scroll pattern capitals and paterae rising to the second-floor level, and plainer pilasters above. Most windows are sash windows. The ground floor centre window is distinguished by a rounded archivolt and narrow pilasters. A one-story projection with a basement extends from the east end, with steps leading up to the entrance from the garden. A prostyle porch is located on the west return. The south front previously featured a delicate veranda.
The interior was not inspected for this listing but was formerly noted for containing several fireplaces in the Adams style, two-inch mahogany doors, decorative ceiling detail in the entrance hall, and original cornices on other ceilings. The house is the only surviving example of its kind in an area that, in the 18th and 19th centuries, comprised several small gentlemen's estates, now bounded by Guy Road, Wandle Bank, and Cedars Road. Further information can be found in the Brandries Hill House Sale Catalogues of 1882 and 1884, and in "A History of Beddington" by The Rev Thomas Bentham.
