Description

These are 17th to 18th century garden walls enclosing a garden to the east of Beddington Park Cottages, located at Beddington Place (Carew Manor Special School). The eastern wall of the garden extends south until it meets at a right angle a wall running east-west across the school grounds.

The east, south, and a portion of the north walls of the garden are constructed from brick with a battered (sloping) coping. The north wall only covers part of the garden’s northern boundary, with railings marking the eastern part of that boundary. The south wall extends as far as Beddington Park Cottages. A later west wall is surmounted by a plain capping.

The eastern wall continues south, beyond the Cottages, for a further distance, connecting to an east-west wall divided into 21 bays by brick pilasters, all with battered coping. Brick piers with capping flank the ends of this east-west wall. To the west of the western pier is a lower, renewed section topped with railings, alongside a section of original walling that has been partially damaged.

At the east end of the pilastered wall, a section of plain brick walling crosses the Wandle River and joins at a right angle a wall that continues northwards establishing the rear garden boundary for numbers 96 to 114 (even) Crispin Crescent. This latter section is partly renewed, but in places shares a similar brick hue to the walls surrounding Beddington Park Cottages.

These walls form a group with the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, Lychgates, Churchyard Walls, Church Lane wall, Orangery Wall at Beddington Place, a gate and screen, the Pigeon House, numbers 1 to 3 (consecutive) Beddington Park Cottages, premises occupied by the Hockey Club, East Lodge, a wall to the southwest of Beddington Park Cottages, and garden walls to the north of the Orangery and Beddington Place.
