Description
The Institute, also known as The Henrietta Barnett School, is a Grade II* listed building located in Hampstead Garden Suburb, designed by architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and others. This two-storey structure features dormers in the roof and is constructed of grey and red bricks with stone dressings, topped with tile roofs. The ground storey is designed as a podium, while the principal first storey is pilastered. The central block is recessed behind the side wings, which have five window bays. The central window is pedimented and stone dressed, and the centre of the building has a mansard roof with dormers, supporting an elaborate cupola. The side wings also consist of five windows and are treated similarly. The courtyard elevations of these wings include niches on either side of the central feature, and cornices with stone balustraded parapets are present throughout.
The rear elevation presents a different appearance due to the sloping ground. It is three storeys high and built of silver-grey brick, accented with red brick window and quoin dressings, and stone bands. The central feature projects above the eaves, creating a four-storey tripartite stone treatment in the Ionic Order, with pilasters for the upper two storeys. The ground storey, which is rusticated and of podium height, features round arched windows and a balustraded balcony above. The first floor has full-height sash windows that are simply treated. The entire structure is topped with a pediment, behind which is the previously mentioned elaborate cupola.
