Description
Daneshill House is a Grade II listed building designed by Edwin Lutyens in 1903. It features a combination of severe Arts and Crafts style on the north and east sides, and Edwardian Baroque on the south and west. This H-plan house has two storeys, red tile roofing, and walls made of thin red bricks laid in Flemish bond, with tile heads and sills for the smaller openings.
The plain north front includes gabled wings, with a double gable on the east side, and a window arrangement of 2:3:1:3:1. Most windows are small coupled casements with brick mullions, but there are larger 4, 5, and 7 unit lights in the gables. The boarded door is set within an open porch that features an arch within a moulded rectangular framework.
On the south elevation, there are flanking gables and three large dormers. The middle section has low eaves with openings on either side of the centre, supported by square columns made of tiles. The dormers are tile-hung, with two having gabled roofs and one with a hipped roof, featuring large mullioned and transom windows. The gabled wings are also tile-hung above the first-floor level.
The west elevation is more elaborate, showcasing a large dormer and two smaller half-dormers, with eaves at three different levels above set-back walling, separated by massive chimneys, one of which has two diagonal flues. Inside, there is a Tudor-style fireplace made of brick and tile, featuring octagonal sides, a stepped cambered opening, and tile-on-edge decoration.
