Description
The Tithe Barn is a Grade I listed building dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. It is a large rectangular brick structure divided into six bays by buttresses. The barn features two tall, four-centred arched entrances located at the second and fifth bays, with each bay having three ventilating slots at two levels. The steep gabled tile roof is supported by arch-braced purlins and timber trusses, which include eleven within a ten-bay interior subdivision. These trusses consist of a high cambered tie-beam above arch braces and four vertical supports, with the two central uprights meeting a secondary tie. Above the massive wallplates, there are vertical studs.
The walls are constructed of red brick in English bond, with weathered buttresses at the top and midway, and a high plinth surrounding the building. The entrances feature inner stone arches, while the north side has smaller plain brick arches. Attached to the west end is a smaller unit built in a similar style, dating from a later period. This unit has four bays and a north aisle, which is narrower than the main block. Its walls are also made of red brick, with two ventilators at two levels for each bay, a high plinth, and a cambered arch at the entrance.
The Queen Post truss in this smaller unit rests on the brick wall on the south side, but has posts and lower ties with struts on a low wall linked to the outer aisle walling. The roofing is made of corrugated iron, extending across an outshot on the south side of the two eastern bays, while the form of this lower roof continues as a tile roof for one bay in front of the main block. This outshot features weather-boarded walling supported by brick pillars on a low brick wall. The Tithe Barn is recognized as an Ancient Monument.
