Description
10 Southway is a detached house built in 1910 by Geoffrey Lucas for the artist T. Roberts. The exterior features painted pebbledash with brick detailing, including corner quoin strips and a storey band. The house has a high, nearly pyramidal tile roof with a brick chimney stack at the peak and slightly swept, boxed eaves. It is two storeys tall and has a one-window range, with a square plan and a trapezoidal single-storey porch at the front. To the left, there is a two-window range with a rectangular bay, and to the right, another two-window range also with a rectangular bay. The first-floor windows extend above the eaves as half dormers. Originally, the front room was used as a studio, and the windows are of an authentic design. The plan is notable for its lack of hallways, utilizing lozenge-shaped vestibules for circulation, with the staircase located at the rear of the chimney stack. The front bedrooms are at different floor heights to accommodate a higher ceiling in the studio below. The design is praised for its extreme simplicity and reflects international architectural trends, particularly the planning innovations of Frank Lloyd Wright from around the turn of the century.
