Description
No. 9 Upper Grosvenor Street is a terraced town house built between 1730 and 1731, with a top floor and mansard added in the 19th century. The building features darkened brick with a rusticated stucco-faced ground floor and a slate roof. It stands four storeys tall, including a basement and a dormered mansard, and is three windows wide. The entrance is located to the right and is highlighted by a projecting Grecian Doric portico-porch, which frames a segmental arched doorway with a six-panel door and sidelights beneath a fanlight. The windows are recessed glazing bar sashes set under segmental red brick arches with red brick dressings. A brick plat band runs along the first floor, topped by a parapet with coping. The first floor also features an early 19th-century geometric pattern cast iron balcony. The area railings are made of cast iron and have foliated spearhead finials. Inside, the house retains many original features, including substantially intact panelling on the ground and first floors. A staircase from the 1960s incorporates a reset 18th-century wrought iron balustrade. At the rear, there is a small enclosed courtyard with walls decorated by Doulton ceramic panels designed by sculptor Gilbert Bayes, likely installed in 1928.
