Description

No. 44 Upper Grosvenor Street is one of a pair of terraced townhouses, built between 1727 and 1730, likely by carpenter Charles Griffith, with a heightening added in the 19th century. The building is constructed of brown brick and features a slate roof, standing five storeys tall with a basement and three windows wide. The entrance, located to the right and mirroring that of No. 45, boasts an original wooden doorcase with fluted engaged Ionic columns and a modillion-bracketed pediment, along with a six-panel door and a lunette fanlight. The first floor has recessed cambered head glazing bar sashes and French windows. A stuccoed plat band runs above the ground floor, and a brick band over the second floor connects with No. 45, topped by a parapet with coping. Wrought iron area railings are present as well.

The rear elevation features a full-height three-window bow dating from around 1791. Inside, the early 18th-century hall and staircase have seen little alteration, retaining intact panelling in the hall and a fluted pilaster archway leading to the stair compartment, which extends to the first floor and is top lit. The staircase includes a carved cut string and three corkscrew balusters per tread, with the top light set in a decorated plaster dome on a deep drum. There is also a well-crafted architraved door leading off the compartment to the rear ground floor. The main rooms, bathroom, and washrooms were redecorated by M. Boudin of Jansen et Cie, Paris, around 1934, featuring circular and oval bedrooms with coral and shell wall lights.
