Description
This building, located at 156-170 Regent Street in Westminster, is a Grade II listed block of offices and shops that began construction in 1904 by Crickmay and Sons. It features a Portland stone exterior with a slate roof and red polished granite on the ground and first floors, showcasing a Baroque-classical style. The structure has four storeys, with attics and a steep mansard roof that includes dormer windows.
The symmetrical facade is 11 windows wide, with three slightly advanced flanking bays and rounded, domed corners. The ground floor has mid-20th century shop fronts. The corner, end, and central bays on the ground and first floors have semicircular arched recesses, which are flanked by rusticated pilasters supporting an entablature. The upper floors feature architraved sash windows with cornices on the second floor and a central segmental pediment.
The three-window end bays are adorned with giant pilasters that rise through the first and second floors, supporting an entablature and segmental pediments with carved tympana. The balustraded parapets are topped with lion finials. The bowed corners are highlighted by engaged Ionic columns that extend through the second and third floors, carrying a continuous entablature. These columns continue through the fourth and fifth floors, culminating in copper domes with cornices, scrolled buttresses, and enriched lunettes.
