Description
Chesham House is a block of offices and shops built between 1923 and 1925 by H. Tanner. It features a Portland stone facade and a slate roof, designed in the Neo-Classical Beaux Arts style. The building stands five storeys high with attics and has nine major bays. The ground floor has a podium with pilasters that support an entablature, while mid-20th century shop fronts have been inserted. The upper floors are distinguished by a giant order, with the central and end bays featuring Corinthian columns in antis and pilasters in between. These frame bays containing three metal casement windows, with the windows on the first and second floors set in architraved recesses. Above these, on the third floor, there are console-bracketed pediments. The giant order continues to the fourth floor, which is treated as a frieze below the entablature, with the windows of the central and end bays flanked by carved panels of triumphal ornament. The attic storey is topped with a dentil cornice.
