Description

No. 23 Golden Square is a terrace house built in 1684. It features stock brick with red rubbed brick dressings and a slate roof. The building has four storeys, with the top floor being an early addition, a basement, and a wide dormered attic. It is three windows wide. The late 18th century doorway is located to the right and has a semicircular arch with a six-panel door and a radial patterned fanlight. A late 19th or early 20th century display window has been inserted into the rest of the ground floor. The upper floors have slightly recessed late 18th century sash windows, with those on the second and third floors retaining their glazing bars. These windows are set under flat rubbed brick gauged arches and have rubbed brick dressings and stone sills. There are rubbed brick plat bands and a moulded brick cornice below the parapet, along with wrought iron area railings. The interior has been considerably altered but still retains a panelled stairwell and a dog leg carved and cut string staircase with turned balusters, a moulded handrail, and fluted Doric column newels. This house is one of the very few original buildings remaining in the square.
