Description
No. 21 Beak Street is a terrace house built in the late 17th century or more likely the early 18th century, with alterations made around 1830 to 1840. The building is faced with stucco and has a concealed roof. It stands four storeys high and is three windows wide. The ground floor features a yard entry on the left and an early to mid-19th century shop front with pilasters that extend into the yard passage, topped with an entablature fascia that connects to No. 19. The upper floors have closely set architraved plate glass sash windows with cornices on the first and second floors. A cornice and blocking course crown the building. The rear elevation still shows original brickwork and has flush framed segmental arched sash windows. Inside, the first-floor front room has well-preserved fielded paneling, a deeply moulded box cornice, overmantel panels, and a panelled soffit cross beam on the ceiling, along with panelled doors. The rear room features simpler panelling. The dog leg staircase retains its closed string, turned balusters, and column newels above the ground floor.
