Description

No. 85 Wimpole Street is a terrace house built in 1913 by F. M. Elgood. The building features a Portland stone ashlar facade and a slate roof, rising four storeys with a basement and a steeply set-back mansard. Its elevation is simply detailed, blending Arts and Crafts elements with mid-18th century French influences.

The ground floor includes a recessed doorway framed by a shallow bolection architrave, with a recessed window to the left. Between these features is a flush framed glazing bar sash window that is set back from the wall plane. Above this, a shallow canted bay window extends through the first, second, and third floors, featuring flush framed glazing bar sash lights set within shallow bolection architraves.

Raised panels above the first and second floor windows create a cambered arch effect, while the window architraves suggest vertical "ribs" on the bay. The bay culminates in a boldly projecting cornice supported by festooned console corbels at each end. Additionally, there is a console-bracketed balcony on the first floor, which is divided into two parts by the bay window.
