Description

No. 24 Wigmore Street is a building that includes shops and flats above, dated 1893 and designed by C.H. Worley. It features red and blue banded brick with terracotta dressings and a tiled roof, all in a free Jacobethan style, situated on a prominent corner site. The building has five storeys, including an attic. The ground floor shop fronts are faced with terracotta and have arcaded windows with short pilasters above the impost level, leading up to a dentilled fascia and a splayed corner entrance.

A notable feature of the elevation is the large bowed corbelled oriel-tower, which has mullioned lights and rises to the third floor, capped with a parapet. Above this, there is a set-back, tile-hung fourth floor with a tiled conical roof topped by a delicate cupola. The corner bay is distinguished by a boldly projecting and modelled external chimney stack that separates it from the Wimpole Street front.

The Wimpole Street elevation includes two full-height canted bays with shaped finialed gables, each featuring four mullioned and transomed lights on every floor, along with a bay of heavy fenestration at mezzanine level. There is also a segmental arched entrance to the flats located between the bays. Sill courses and band courses are present at transom levels, contributing to the distinctive brick and terracotta character of this section of Wigmore Street.
