Description
44 and 46 Wigmore Street is a row of shops with flats above, built around 1890-1900. The building is made of red brick with buff terracotta dressings and banding, topped with slate roofs. It is designed in a Free Flemish Renaissance style and has five storeys, including gabled attics. The ground floor features shop fronts that were altered in the mid-20th century, but it retains a central group of three semicircular arched doorways, with the middle doorway providing access to the upper floors and featuring a carved tympanum.
The upper floors have nine windows set in terracotta frames, which are highlighted by terracotta banded piers, pediments, and curved, finialed crestings above the window heads. The building also includes terracotta sill and band courses, a cornice over the third floor, and a banded parapet above, which is adorned with three shaped pedimented and finialed gables.
