Description

No. 42 Wigmore Street is a shop, showroom, and flats built in the 1890s in the Flemish Renaissance style. It is constructed of pale terracotta with a tiled roof and stands five storeys tall, featuring three main bays. The ground floor has a mid-20th century shop front. The first floor showcases arched windows in the outer bays and a pair of arcaded windows in the center. The second floor has a similar layout but with flat arched mullioned windows. The third floor mirrors the first with arched outer windows and a group of four arcaded mullioned lights in the center. The fourth floor, set within a gable, includes a group of four semicircular arched lights with miniature pairs of arcaded top lights and an oculus at the apex, all featuring small paned casements. Each floor is accented with moulded sill and string courses, and there are carved panels in the frieze below the fourth floor. The gable rises from carved stops and is topped with finials on shafts that rise from the fourth-floor window, culminating in a segmental pediment cap. A tall corniced terracotta chimney stack is located at the west gable end.
