Description
Nos. 76 and 78 Wigmore Street is a building dating from 1906 to 1907, designed by Treadwell and Martin. It features chambers or flats with a corner shop and has been refurbished with renewed shop fronts in 1984-85. The structure is made of red brick with stone dressings and has slate roofs. It is designed in a Free Style "Jacobethan" manner, characterized by a strong vertical emphasis and imaginative detailing at the corner, typical of the architects' work. The building stands five storeys tall, including gabled attics, and is three windows wide.
At the corner, there is a broad canted bay and splay leading to Jason Court, with a four-bay return. The shop front has been renewed and is plain, featuring capped bracket ends to the fascia that extends over the corner entrance. Above the shop front, a canted stone bay rises through the first and second floors, showcasing mullioned-transomed leaded casements and topped with a plain parapet, which has a lunette above on the third floor. This bay is set between flanking piers, which are banded at the third floor level and rise to decorative elements at the parapet, including a five-light leaded casement. The shaped gable above features lozenge patterning in the tympanum.
To the left, there are mullioned transomed casements with linked hood moulds on the first floor. The corner splay is capped by a small, slated, conical-roofed oriel on the fourth floor, which has enriched panels beneath it. The shaped gable on the return to Jason Court has similar but simpler details.
