Description
This is a grand terrace of six houses, numbers 36 to 42, located on the north side of Lancaster Gate in London. Dating from 1865, they were designed by John Johnson. The houses are constructed of stucco with a slate mansard roof. They are four storeys high, with an attic mansard level. The ground floor is rusticated. Each house features paired projecting porches with rusticated columns. A balustraded balcony runs along the front of the first floor. The windows are generally square-headed, except those on the first floor, which are round-headed. They are sash windows with plate glass. The facades have dentil cornices above the first-floor windows, which project over those windows. Cornices are also present above the second-floor windows. The windows have architraves. A rich frieze and console cornice adorns the area above the third-floor windows. The terrace has a balustraded parapet; this is present on houses 41 and 42, but is missing from the other houses. The terrace forms part of the planned layout for Lancaster Gate.
