Description
The Cabmen's Shelter, located to the north of the central garden in Hanover Square, was built in 1897. This structure features a timber frame with tongue and groove timber panel infill and a timber-clad hipped roof that extends to the eaves. It measures seven bays by three bays, with the entrance situated on the south side. The upper part of the wall in the second, third, and fifth bays has windows made of plate glass. There is a narrow band of decorative fretwork panels located between the windows and the eaves. The eaves also showcase prominent rafters with decorative ends, and the stump of a central fleche remains intact. This shelter was erected by the Cabmen's Shelter Fund and is recognized as one of the most elaborate surviving examples of its kind.
