Description
A cabmen's shelter, erected in 1897 to a design of 1882 by the architect Maximilian Clarke, stands in the centre of the road outside Oratory House. It is a timber-framed structure with timber cladding and overlapping timber boards to the low-pitched, half-hipped roof, featuring overhanging eaves. The shelter is single-storied and comprises seven bays by three bays, with an entrance on the south-west end. The timber frame is expressed with panels of vertical boarding set between horizontal and vertical members. Three square-headed windows with six panes and glazing bars are positioned on each side, each with pivoting lights above and fretwork panels below the eaves. Louvred gablets are present at each end, and a square louvre with a tented rooflet is in the centre of the roof. This is a rare, intact surviving example of this design.
