Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade II* listed building located in Paddington Green, Westminster. It was constructed between 1788 and 1791 by architect John Plaw, with 19th-century alterations and a restoration in 1972 by Raymond Erith. The church is built of yellow-brown brick with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof, while the cupola has a lead roof.
The building has a Greek cross plan, with a central square topped by a cupola and narrower arms extending from it. The principal entrance is located on the south arm of the cross, designed as a Doric portico with attached columns arranged in antis and a pediment at the gable end. A flight of four steps leads up to the panelled double-leaf doors, which are framed by an architrave and topped with a hood on consoles.
On the west cross arm, there is a bowed tetrastyle Tuscan porch with a thermal window above it. The east side features a Venetian window set in a round-arched recess, while the north side has a round-arched recess containing a thermal window above a 4-light pilastered window in a segmental surround. The gable ends are adorned with pediments, and the return walls include niches and square blind panels above.
The central block has two levels of small-paned windows with leaded lights, all set under gauged brick arches. An ashlar frieze and cornice run along the top, and the roof is hipped. The octagonal cupola is supported by paired columns at the angles.
Inside, the church features galleries on three sides supported by columns, segmental vaults, and a shallow dome. It retains its original font, pulpit, altar, and altar rail.
