Description

The Children's Hospital at Paddington Green dates to 1895, designed by H.P. Adams. It is a red brick building with red terracotta dressings, originally three storeys high with 16 main bays plus a central entrance. The left-hand three bays feature a Dutch gable. The right-hand bays have a mid-20th century extension in front of the original facade. The entrance is distinguished by a sculpted group depicting a mother and children, set within the Dutch gable, with segmental and round windows above. A return elevation exists to the left. The building is of group value, largely due to the extensive tile pictures within the hospital. Thirteen tile pictures are set within the walls of the day centre inside the Outpatients Department, depicting subjects such as "Frenchay," "As happy as a King," "Paddington Green," "Digging on the sands," a snowball game, a tea party, "The White Stone Pond, Hampstead," "Building," "Babes in the Wood," "Boy Scouts," a boy by a lake, "A Mad Tea Party," and "Sowing." Further tile pictures, now covered up, are also present in the Mary Adelaide and Princess Louise Wards.
