Description
This is a terrace of houses built around 1828 by S P Cockerell for the Bishop of London's Trustees. The houses are constructed of brown brick in a Flemish bond, with a channelled stucco ground floor. A sill band and coping are visible on the stucco work of the third floor. Welsh slate mansard roofs have been added to numbers 35 and 36, concealing the original roofline elsewhere.
The terrace comprises four storeys and a basement. The central six-bay section projects slightly, flanked by twelve-bay wings, with the end houses also projecting. The ground floor features round-arched recesses containing panelled doors, each topped by a fanlight; some fanlights have radial glazing and are flanked by pilasters. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars. Decorative iron balconies are present on most of the first-floor windows. Most upper windows have flat, gauged brick arches, although numbers 23, 36, and 37 feature stucco architraves instead. Number 28 has a later added parapet and dormer windows. The basement has railings with arrowheads, which ramp up to the steps leading to the entrances.
