Description
No. 6 Stanhope Place is a terraced town house built around 1828-1830, possibly designed by George Gutch. It is part of the first phase of the Tyburnia development. The house is finished in stucco with incised joint lines and a channelled ground floor, and it has a concealed slate roof. The building stands three storeys tall with a basement and features three windows across its façade.
The central entrance has a semicircular arched doorway next to a segmental arched mews entrance. The door is panelled with reeded jambs and a head under a fanlight, and a mid-20th century canopy has been added. The ground floor windows have been altered, while the first floor features margin glazed French casements set in shallow moulded architrave surrounds with cornices. The second floor has recessed glazing bar sashes. There is a plat band at the first floor level and a crowning cornice with a blocking course above.
A cast iron balcony with a geometric pattern is present on the first floor, along with cast iron area railings topped with urn finials. This property is part of the Tyburnia development, which was initially planned by S.P. Cockerell in 1827 but was laid out according to a modified plan by his successor George Gutch.
