Description
No. 7, Stanhope Place is a terraced house dating from approximately 1828-30, and possibly designed by George Gutch as part of the initial phase of development for Tyburnia. The house is stuccoed with channelled detailing to the ground floor, topped by a slate roof. It has a basement and three storeys plus dormered mansards. It is two windows wide. A semicircular arched doorway is on the right-hand side, featuring a panelled door and a radial patterned fanlight, with a keystone to the arch. The ground floor windows are recessed glazing bar sashes, with channelling struck to the arches. First floor windows are French casements, and second floor windows are glazing bar sashes. A plat band runs along the first floor. There is a crowning cornice and a blocking course at the top. A continuous, cast iron balcony with a geometric pattern extends across the first floor. Cast iron area railings with urn finials are also present.
The house is part of the Tyburnia development, originally planned by S.P. Cockerell in 1827 for the Bishop of London's Estate, but subsequently laid out to a modified plan by George Gutch.
