Description
No. 8, Stanhope Place is a terraced house built around 1830 as part of the initial development of Tyburnia. It was constructed on the Bishop of London’s Estate and the scheme was originally planned in 1827 by S.P. Cockerell, although the final layout was modified by George Gutch. The house is stuccoed with channelled detailing to the ground floor, and has a concealed slate roof. It is two storeys and a basement, unusually short compared to the typical three or four-storey buildings of the development, with a particularly tall ground floor. The right-hand side features a semicircular arched doorway with a later door and a simple fanlight. The windows are recessed, square-headed sash windows with glazing bars. A plat band separates the ground floor from the upper floors. The building is topped with a crowning cornice and a stucco balustrade featuring an intricate interlace loop pattern. A delicate cast iron balcony, displaying a Gothic pattern, is situated on the first floor. Cast iron area railings, finished with urn finials, front the property.
