Description
A pair of terraced houses located at 9 and 10 Stanhope Place, built around 1828-30. They were likely designed by George Gutch during the initial phase of the Tyburnia development, which was originally planned by S.P. Cockerell. The houses are constructed of stock brick with a channelled stucco ground floor, and have slate roofs. They rise four storeys with dormered mansards, and include basements. Each front is two windows wide, with semicircular arched doorways on the left side, featuring panelled doors and patterned fanlights. Canted bay windows were inserted in the mid-19th century to the ground floor. The upper floors have recessed sash windows set within flat, gauged arches. A plat band defines the top of the stucco ground floor, and a crowning stucco cornice and blocking course top the facades. A continuous, cast iron balcony with a geometric pattern runs along the first floor. Cast iron area railings are present, finished with urn finials. The Tyburnia development was part of the Bishop of London's Estate.
