Description

This is a terrace of buildings including numbers 8, 10, and 10A Connaught Street, and number 2 Porchester Place, laid out around 1828. Designed by S P Cockerell for the Trustees of the Bishop of London, it represents an example of group value. The buildings are constructed of brown brick in Flemish bond, with some areas painted, and have a channelled stucco ground floor. A stucco sill band and cornice mark the third floor. There are four storeys and a basement, with each building having two bays, except for number 17, which has three. Round-arched recesses contain six-panel doors, flanked by consoles, with number 17 featuring attached Tuscan columns. Patterned fanlights are found over the doors of numbers 17 to 22A. Number 2 Porchester Place has a significantly altered 19th-century shop front. Sashes with glazing bars are present in most buildings (except numbers 8 and 10A) and are set beneath flat, gauged brick arches. Decorative iron balconies adorn the first floor. Basement railings feature arrowheads and urn finials, which ramp up to flank the steps leading to the entrances.
