Description

No. 38 Langham Street is a terrace house built in the latter part of the 18th century, which was refronted around 1900 while still retaining many original interior features. The building is constructed of red brick and has a slate roof. It stands five storeys tall, originally designed as four storeys, with a basement and is three windows wide. The ground floor features a stone-banded facade with an ornate neo-Flemish doorway at the center. The sash windows are set within brick mannerist architraves, and the exterior includes string courses, a parapet with coping, and a cornice. Ornately patterned cast iron area railings enhance the front.

Inside, the house retains numerous original features, including a stone staircase in a spacious compartment with square iron balusters and a mahogany handrail that has a voluted curtail. The ground floor rear room boasts a Coade stone chimneypiece with an overmantel featuring a wreathed classical tondo, along with a panelled alcove and dado rail. The first floor consists of connected drawing rooms that have a reeded frame with a lion mask corner blocked opening, likely from the early 19th century, while the rear room showcases an elegant late 18th-century plasterwork ceiling. The property is noted for its high-quality door and window furniture throughout, which includes transitional Neo-classical detailing such as overdoors and chimneypieces on the first floor. The house is listed for its significant interior features.
