Description
Maitland Cook, also known as The London Private Hospital, is a building constructed in 1901 by Arthur E Thompson. Originally built as chambers, it features a distinctive design in an eccentric Free Style that incorporates elements of Romanesque architecture. The exterior is made of white ceramic brick, possibly from Doulton, with black ceramic brick banding and dressings, topped with a slate roof.
The building stands four storeys high with a basement and is seven windows wide. The central entrance showcases a Norman arched doorway with barley sugar shafted jambs that project slightly forward. The sash windows, which do not have glazing bars, are adorned with semi-circular arches on the ground, first, and second floors, while the third floor features cambered arches. The second-floor windows are supported by corbels and have a set forward miniature arcading above them, and the third-floor windows are set beneath an arcaded moulded band course. Additional decorative elements include sill courses, chequer and plain black ceramic brick flush banding, and window labels. The cornice below the arcaded parapet is elegantly swept up with diaper work, culminating in a bold, central, arcaded and shafted chimney stack.
