Description

No. 40 Langham Street is a terrace house built in the late 18th century and refronted around 1900. It is constructed of red brick with a slate roof and has five storeys, originally designed as four, along with a basement. The building is three windows wide and features a stone-banded ground floor with an ornate neo-Flemish doorway on the right. The sash windows are set within brick mannerist architraves, and there are string courses along with a parapet that has coping and a cornice. The area railings are made of ornately patterned cast iron.

Inside, the house retains many original features, including an entrance hall with a cornice that leads into a square lobby with four arches and a ceiling rose. The transverse arches spring from pilasters with paterae capitals, and the side arches frame the doorcases. The front room on the ground floor has an enriched dado and bayleaf plasterwork above a mid-19th century marble fireplace. The stairwell features an enriched storey band, and the front room on the first floor has a frieze with bucranium and urn motifs. A stone staircase with a wrought iron balustrade adds to the interior's quality, which also includes high-quality door and window furniture throughout, as well as neo-classical overdoors on the first floor. The building is listed for its significant interior features.
