Description

The Church of All Souls, located on Langham Place, is a Grade I listed building designed by John Nash and constructed between 1822 and 1824. It was restored after sustaining damage during the war. The church is built of Bath stone and features a hipped slate roof. Its rectangular body is complemented by a circular portico at the southwest end, a tower, and a peristyle encircled spire, which serve as distinctive elements of this neoclassical hybrid design. This design not only closes the vista but also acts as a focal point for the change in direction of Nash's Via Triumphalis between Langham Place and Portland Place.

The circular portico, raised on a flight of steps, is supported by giant Ionic columns that carry an entablature and a balustraded parapet. Above the portico, the circular tower features an architraved and corniced entrance, rising to an open Corinthian columned peristyle that screens the base of the 12-sided stone spire. The main body of the church, extending to the northeast, is constructed in plain ashlar over two storeys, with six-window sides that have square-headed windows in the lower register and semicircular arched windows above. The structure includes a plinth, plat band, sill band, crowning cornice, and blocking course.

Inside, the church features a gallery supported by chamfered piers, with Corinthian columns rising to a flat ceiling that has an enriched cove. There is also a circular vestibule at the base of the tower. A copy of a bust of Nash by Behnes is located in the portico.
