Description
This building, located at 43 Great Portland Street, is an office block constructed between 1906 and 1910 by architects W. and E. Hunt. It features a Portland stone facade and a slate roof, showcasing a bold neo-Grec design that is early for this architectural style. The structure has four storeys, with the ground floor and first floor combined as a podium, and includes a basement.
The building is five bays wide, with an arcaded rusticated podium. The entrance is situated in the central bay, designed as an Ionic columned aedicule porch with a pediment that rises in front of the mezzanine window within the tympanum of the arch. Flanking the entrance are shop windows, with a fret-ornamented band at the impost level and scrolls adorning the key blocks of the arcade.
The upper floors feature architraved metal casements framed by a giant Ionic order that extends from the podium to a heavy dentilled entablature, which is decorated with wreaths over the columns and antae, along with acroteria faced stops above. There is a moulded bandcourse at the second floor and enriched cornices above the second-floor windows, which include an open cartouche pediment over the central window. The section of the building at 43 Great Portland Street has a stone facade of similar character but is plainer in design.
