Description
Walmar House is a block of offices and shops located between Great Castle Street and Margaret Street in the City of Westminster. It was designed by C.T. Armstrong around 1915 and completed by W.J. Fryer around 1920. The building features a Portland ashlar facing and a slate roof, showcasing a Sub Beaux Arts style.
The structure is four storeys high, with an attic storey and two tiers of dormers in a steep mansard roof. It is five major bays wide, with each bay containing three windows, and the ends of the building slightly recessed with one and two windows. The corners are splayed, and there are six window returns.
The ground floor has shop windows and doorways that have been altered, framed by tall engaged Roman Doric columns that support a modified entablature. The upper floors feature recessed metal casement windows, with the central first floor window of each major bay flanked by engaged Doric columns that carry a continuous entablature, alternating between triangular and segmental pediments. A fluted plat band is present at the second floor level, along with a modified Greek Doric main cornice, which is topped by three light dormers. The roof includes bronze edge castings, and there are cast iron balconies at the second floor windows.
