Description

Oxford Circus Underground Station entrance, located on the north-west corner of Argyll Street and Oxford Street, is a two-storey building featuring a steel frame clad in brick, faced with ox-blood red faience produced by the Leeds Fireclay Company Limited.

The building stands prominently at a corner site with two symmetrical elevations. The north elevation facing Oxford Street has two main pilastered bays and a central half bay. The station entrance is situated in the right-hand bay, while the half-bay features a doorway topped with a segmental pediment that leads to the offices above. The longer east elevation along Argyll Street consists of two paired bays flanked by half-bays; the left-hand half-bay was originally the station exit and is now a restaurant, flanked by a narrower bay. The bays on either side of the angle were let as shops from the beginning and now have modern shop fronts.

The lower frieze on Argyll Street displays the station name in raised gilded lettering, while the frieze on Oxford Street was restored in 1994. Above the frieze, set into the corner, is a cartouche bearing the UER monogram, which is the only intact example remaining. The upper storey features timber Diocletian windows set in keyed semi-circular arches adorned with egg-and-dart decoration, along with a cartouche positioned between the springers of the paired bays. Each half-bay includes an oeil-de-boeuf window, although the upper frieze lettering has been removed.

The interior has experienced several phases of modernization and is not considered to be of special interest.
