Description

Dickins and Jones is a department store block located on Regent Street in the City of Westminster, built between 1921 and 1922 by Sir H. Tanner. The building features a Portland stone façade and has a concealed roof. It showcases a style that combines classical eclecticism with influences from the Beaux Arts and some Egyptian-inspired details. The structure is a four-storey square block that extends back to Little Argyle Street and includes stepped attic storeys.

The symmetrical front of the building is seven major bays wide, with a projecting five-bay center, splayed corners, and three-bay returns to Little Argyll Street, Argyll Street, and Great Marlborough Street. The ground floor shop windows, which were altered in the mid-20th century, and the central entrance portal are framed by broad pilasters that support an entablature adorned with bronze lion head rings in the frieze.

On the upper floors, each major bay features triple groups of architraved bronze casement windows, with the central windows displaying a horns winged motif. The major bays are articulated through three storeys by a giant, quasi-Corinthian order of pilasters that support the main entablature. The three-bay centerpiece has attics elevated with pilasters and an entablature topped with a blocking course. Bronze candelabra flank the projecting five-bay center at the first-floor level, and there are cast iron balconies on the first and second floors.
