Description
A pair of K6 telephone kiosks is located in Argyll Street, London.
The K6 kiosks are made of cast iron and are typically painted red. They feature long horizontal glazing in the doors and sides, with applied crowns on the top panels rather than perforated ones. Each kiosk has rectangular white display signs that read "TELEPHONE" beneath the shallow-curved roof on all four sides. These two kiosks have late 20th-century telephone equipment and retain their red paint, signage, and embossed crowns. However, one of the kiosks is missing a glazing panel, and the door of the more southerly kiosk has some damage. The presence of the King's crown indicates that these kiosks date from before 1952. They are situated at the end of a pedestrian area in the bustling west end of London.
The kiosks have a strong visual connection with several listed buildings nearby, including the London Palladium Theatre, The Argyll Public House, and the premises of Messrs Liberty & Company Limited, all of which are listed at Grade II*. Other nearby listed buildings include Dickins and Jones, 229-247 Regent Street, Palladium House, Oxford Circus Underground Station, and the Peter Robinson Stores, all listed at Grade II.
It is noted that the late 20th-century telephone equipment is not considered to have special architectural or historic interest.
