Description

Nos 13 to 23 Belgrave Square is a grand terrace of houses built around 1825, designed by George Basevi. The buildings are constructed of stucco and feature a low slated mansard roof in a Graeco-Roman style. The center and end houses are slightly set forward and are adorned with giant fluted Corinthian columns on the first and second floors. Each house has three windows across, except for the center house, which has five windows. The ground floor has channelling, and there are projecting Doric porches. A continuous cast iron balcony runs along the first floor, except for the center and end houses, which have a stucco balustrade. The windows are square-headed, with architraves above the ground floor and pediments above the first floor windows of the center and end houses. Most windows are sash, primarily with plate glass, and there are French casements on the first floor. A dentil cornice is present above the second floor, and there is a balustraded parapet. The central house features cartouches in the attic. The interiors have not been inspected, and there are cast iron area railings. This terrace is one of four grand terraces facing Belgrave Square.
