Description

This is a grand terrace of houses located on Belgrave Square, dating from around 1825 and designed by George Basevi. The buildings are constructed of stucco with a low slate mansard roof and are executed in a Graeco-Roman style. The central pair of houses and the end houses are set forward slightly, featuring giant Corinthian columns on the first and second floors. The terrace comprises three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with each house originally three windows wide, except for No 31, which has four. Projecting porches are present, featuring waterleaf capitals on the columns. The ground floor is channelled, and a continuous cast iron balcony runs along the first floor. The windows have architraves, with those of the central pair being pedimented. A dentil cornice is positioned above the second floor. A balustrade with urn finials tops the attic, while the attic of the central houses exhibits elaborate acanthus decoration and a cartouche flanked by female figures. The flank elevation of No 25, facing Belgrave Place, incorporates two Coade stone reliefs depicting cherubs dating from 1796, originally from the former Danish-Norwegian Consulate at 20-21 Wellclose Square, Stepney. The interior of the houses has not been inspected. Cast iron area railings are present. The terrace forms one of four grand terraces facing onto Belgrave Square.
