Description

These are a pair of terraced town houses dating from around 1810 to 1811, designed by J.T. Parkinson as part of the Montagu-Bryanston Square development for the Portman Estate. The houses are constructed of stock brick with a channelled stucco finish to the ground floor, and have a concealed slate roof. They extend over five stories plus a basement. Each house has a three-window front. The semicircular arched doorways feature panelled doors, pilastered and fluted jambs, sidelights, and fanlights. The recessed sash windows on the upper floors retain some original glazing bars and are set under flat, gauged arches. A plat band outlines the top of the stucco ground floor. A crowning stucco cornice and blocking course tops the facades. Continuous cast iron balconies with a geometric patterned design are located on the first floor. Cast iron area railings with urn finials are present. A Greater London Council plaque indicates that Anthony Trollope resided at No. 39.
