Description
Nos. 53 and 55 on Dorset Street are a pair of terraced houses built around 1790-1800 as part of the Portman Estate development. They form the return of Nos. 28A and 28 to 46 on Manchester Street. The houses are constructed of stock brick with stucco ground floors and have concealed slate roofs. They rise to four storeys and feature a combined frontage that is five windows wide, with two of the windows being blind on the left side.
No. 53 has an early 19th-century shop front frame with pilasters that support an entablature-fascia, while Nos. 54 and 55 have a mid-20th-century shop front. The upper floors are adorned with recessed sash windows and blind windows, all set beneath flat gauged red brick arches. A crowning stucco cornice and blocking course complete the design. This listing is included for its group value.
