Description

Nos. 49 and 50 Manchester Street are a pair of terraced houses built around 1780-90 as part of the Portman Estate development. They are constructed of stock brick with channelled stucco to the ground floors, and have concealed slate roofs. The houses are four storeys high with basements, and each has a two-window front. The left-hand side features semicircular arched doorways with enriched Coade stone imposts and keystones above. The doorways have panelled doors with fluted doorheads and fanlights. Recessed sash windows are set within flat, gauged red brick arches on the upper floors; the first-floor windows of No. 50 have been lengthened. A plat band finishes off the stuccowork to the first floor. The facades are topped with parapets and stone copings, and originally had cast iron area railings with urn finials.
