Description

Durrant's Hotel is a hotel located on George Street in the City of Westminster, built around 1780 to 1800. It is part of a terrace from the Portman Estate that was apparently altered in the early 19th century to serve as a hotel, with some modifications made in the mid-20th century. The building is constructed of stock brick with stucco dressings and has a stuccoed ground floor, topped with a slate roof.

The most notable architectural feature is the use of a Tower of the Winds derived pilaster order that defines the upper floors. The hotel has four storeys and a basement, with a 16-window wide facade on George Street where the windows are arranged in pairs. The Manchester Street return features 11 windows grouped in a rhythm of 3;4;4. There is a porch with coupled columns in the second bay from the right.

The windows are mostly recessed sashes, many with glazing bars. The ground floor windows have blind semicircular arches linked by moulded imposts, while the upper floor windows are set under flat gauged arches. A guilloche moulded plat band finishes the ground floor, and the pilaster order frames the window groups, rising to a frieze, dentil cornice, and blocking course. There is a continuous sill band at the third floor. The first bay of windows on the return is blind, and an access way has been added at the far end.
