Description
These are a pair of terraced houses, numbers 51 and 52 Manchester Street, built around 1780 to 1790 as part of the Portman Estate development. The houses are constructed of stock brick with the ground floors finished in channelled stucco; they have concealed slate roofs. They stand four storeys high with basements. Number 51 has a four-window front, while number 52 has a two-window front.
Each house features a semicircular arched doorway, with the doorway for number 51 situated to the right of a mews entrance, and the doorway for number 52 to the left. These doorways are enriched with Coade stone imposts and keystones carved with bearded heads. They have panelled doors adorned with fluted ornament above, and fanlights. The mews entrance is framed by mid-19th century Composite pilasters supporting an entablature. The upper floors have recessed sash windows, set within flat, gauged red brick arches. A plat band marks the finish of the stucco work at the first floor level. Parapets with stone copings top the buildings, and urn-finialed area railings are present.
