Description

These are a pair of terraced houses located on Manchester Street, dating from around 1780 to 1790 as part of the Portman Estate development. The houses are built of stock brick with channelled stucco to the ground floor, and have concealed slate roofs. They are four storeys high with basements. Number 47 has a four-window front, while Number 48 has only two. Each house features a semicircular arched doorway; that of Number 47 is in the second bay from the right, and the doorway to Number 48 is on the left. The doorways are embellished with Coade stone imposts and head keystones, and have panelled doors, fluted doorheads, and patterned fanlights. The upper floors have recessed sash windows within flat, gauged red brick arches. The ground floor windows of Number 47 are topped with vermiculated keystones, and the ground floor window of Number 48 is set within a blind arched panel. A plat band marks the finish of the stucco work at the first floor level. The houses have parapets with stone copings, and original cast iron area railings with urn finials.
