Description

This is a terraced town house and shop, likely dating from around 1790 to 1800. It was constructed as part of the Portman Estate development. The building is of stock brick construction with a concealed slate roof. It is four storeys high and originally had three windows across the front, arranged in a 2:1 rhythm. The ground floor was altered in the mid-20th century, with a new shop front inserted. This shop front has a fascia supported by consoles on either side. The upper floors feature recessed sash windows set beneath flat, gauged red brick arches. A stone-coped parapet tops the facade. A Society of Arts plaque commemorates Michael Faraday’s apprenticeship at this location.
